Learning to follow directions is the basis for so many things as a child moves forward in life. I have come up with a fun way to help them learn this concept.

Start by giving them one simple task at a time. For example, “Can you pick up all the blocks and put them in the block table?” Once they finish that; “OK, how about all the toys that go in the bucket?”

You can also change it up by suggesting, “Can you pick up all the blue blocks? OK, now how about all the red blocks?” and continue until all the blocks are picked up by color.

Use your imagination, there are many ways to change it up. Once your child has mastered doing one task at a time, graduate to asking her or him to do two things at once and see if she or he is able to remember and follow through. Then add three things at once, then four, and so on.

Children love to help us, too, so when you get past this stage, try to think of things to ask them to do to help you, such as bringing you a tissue or the wipes, or a diaper for baby.

Try these fun tips and before you know it, you will be able to tell that your child is a master at following directions of any kind! 🙂
